President United Nations General Assembly
John Ashe, the ambassador to the United Nations for Antigua and Barbude elected as the President of UN
General Assembly for its 68th session.
Ashe will succeed Serbia’s Vuk Jeremic in the post.
He
will assume office at the start of the 68th Session in September 2013.
John William Ashe was chosen by all the 33 GRULAC member
states to be the president of the United Nations General Assembly thus not
necessitating an election.
Ashe was chosen along with 21 vice presidents. Ashe said he
would focus on overcoming poverty and ensuring sustainable development.
Born in 1954, Ashe is also ambassador of his country to the
World Trade Organization and the government's chief negotiator for sustainable
development issues and many other international responsibilities.
United Nations General Assembly consists of all the 193
Member States of the United Nations, the General Assembly provides a forum for
multilateral discussion of international issues covered by the UN Charter. It
meets in regular session intensively from September to December each year, and
thereafter as required.
