Sushma Singh will be the next Chief Information Commissioner
(CIC) of India.
Sushma Singh, the senior-most Information Commissioner, will
be the next Chief Information Commissioner under the Right to Information (RTI)
Act. She would succeed Deepak Sandhu, who is due to finish her term at the end
of December this year.
Ms Singh will be the second woman to become the Chief
Information Commissioner.
Being the senior-most Information Commissioner, Singh was
the unanimous choice for the post of CIC.
Sushma Singh became Information Commissioner on 23 September
2009, in the Central Information Commission. She had retired from the IAS on 31
May 2009.
She is a former Secretary to the Government of India and
belongs to the Jharkhand cadre. She joined the IAS in 1972.
About Central Information Commission
- CIC is constituted by the Central Government through a
Gazette Notification.
- CIC comprises of one Chief Information Commissioner (CIC)
and not more than 10 Information Commissioners (IC) who are appointed by the
President of India.
- Oath of Office is administered by the President of India
in accordance with the form set out in the First Schedule.
- Commission is headquartered in Delhi.
