Renowned Economist Urjit Patel's name is set for appointment
as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), said a senior
Finance Ministry official.
Urjit Patel will replace Subir Gokaran. Gokarn's 3-year term
at the central bank had ended Nov 24. But it was extended till Dec 31.
RBI said in a statement, the monetary policy department will
now be under Governor D. Subbarao.
There are 4 deputy governors in RBI, of which 2 are from the
central bank, 1 is from the banking sector and the 4th is an
economist.
Patel is presently a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution,
a US-based think-tank. Now he will handle monetary policy department at central
bank.
