The interim Parliament of Libya elected Ali Zidan, a betrayer from the Moammar Qadhafi regime, as the new Prime Minister in a tightly-contested vote.Mr Zidan, an independent candidate, won by 93 votes.

The 200-member congress selected Zidan following last week's dismissal of Mustafa Abushagur after just 25 days in the post because of his failure to present a Cabinet list that satisfied legislators.

The president of the national assembly, announcing his victory, asked Mr Zidan to propose a cabinet within two weeks.

The new PM is also a human rights lawyer, who had served as the Europe envoy of  National Transition Council, which governed the country immediately after Qadhafi killed in October last year.

Zidan's top priority will be to name a new government that the congress approves. The Cabinet will be faced with the daunting task of disarming thousands of young men who fought in last year's eight-month civil war that led to the capture and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi..
